Numerous innovations give their premieres at Security Essen. Traditionally, a lot of new products and services are introduced to the trade public for the first time at the fair. Every two years, Messe Essen distinguishes pioneering innovations in security technology with the Security Essen Innovation Award which is presented in the Technology & Products, Services and Fire Protection categories.

This year, exhibitors at Security Essen have submitted 84 applications. Under the leadership of Jens Washausen, Member of the Board of the Federal Association of Independent German Security Consultants and Engineers (BdSI), the expert jury assessed the submissions in matters relating to innovation contents, unique selling points and user benefits. The winners will be distinguished on the first day of the Security Essen fair.

Winners in the Technology & Products Category

Gold Award: Hutchinson GmbH

The lightweight protective kit for vehicles is a comprehensive, retrofittable protective concept for vehicles. Depending on the deployment requirements and the danger scenarios, the user can equip new or already deployed vehicles with it. The new development is based on a fire-retardant and extremely insulating vehicle coating which leads to a decisive improvement in the survivability of the vehicle crew. Emergency vehicles are hardened substantially with regard to their protective properties. The Hutchinson product thus closes the gap between unprotected and armoured or specially protected vehicles.

Silver Award: Novatec Sicherheit & Logistik GmbH

Fences and gates equipped with sensors and cable-based detection systems have already been award winners at this fair in the past, too. For the first time, the PerimeterLocator from Novatec uses RFID acceleration sensors for the cable-free electronic monitoring of any fence or gate installations. It is attached to fences and there is no need for any expensive cabling or excavation work. Of course, the utilisation spectrum for this product is substantially wider. It is equally usable for the contactless recording of guards' patrols or for the monitoring of movable equipment such as containers and vehicles.

Bronze Award: MASTER LOCK EUROPE SAS

Padlocks are already looking back on a long history. The question is: What other innovations should be made there? And nevertheless, the Smart Padlock from Master Lock is now being distinguished because, in combination with a smartphone as the key, it is setting new standards in ergonomics and the functional possibilities. For example, users can make it possible for other people to open the lock for a limited period or retrace past locking operations using a smartphone.

Winners in the Services Category

Gold Award: VdS Schadenverhütung GmbH

The Gold Award winner is taking up the top subject in corporate security: cyber security. The experts from VdS designate it as the fire protection of the 21st century. With VdS cyber security, a very complex subject is being made tangible and manageable for the small and medium-sized enterprises. The Quick Check platform made available online and free of charge is opening up to every manager the possibility of obtaining an overview of the dangers, the risks and the options for action in 20 minutes. The overall procedure aims to break open the complexity of cyber security and to implement effective protective concepts with a sense of economic proportion.

Silver Award: DFBI Deutsche Gesellschaft für Fern- und Onlinebildung mbH

The honour will be presented to a service product which is characterised by great flexibility and economic viability, i.e. the needs-oriented distance learning courses of DFBI. The possibility of having available at all times and everywhere training and further education contents adapted in an employee-specific way saves the security service providers downtimes and travel costs and, as a pleasant side effect, promotes the learning motivation. No matter whether with the app on the smartphone, out and about with the tablet or on the PC at home, the employee is prepared for his/her examinations in a targeted way with his/her individual learning program.

Bronze Award: Bite AG

The DISPONIC software from Bite AG makes important functionalities available for the duty planning and the administration of the security service providers and will make the work easier in many cases. Here, duty planning, holiday applications, invoicing and employee information are networked in an innovative way. For example, it supports the independent assignment of regional and customer tariffs to the deployment locations and times of the employees.

Winners in the Fire Protection Category

Gold Award: Fraunhofer IMS Duisburg and Multicomsystem

With its TempTag, the project community consisting of the Fraunhofer Institute for Microelectronic Circuits and Systems (IMS) in Duisburg and Multicomsystem is addressing an important subject relating to fire protection: early fire detection. In the solution distinguished here, an RFID transponder is married to a temperature sensor and makes it possible to detect critical temperature rises at an early stage due to continuous monitoring in electrical installations and to transmit the alarm to a continuously staffed control room. The alarm is triggered well before the development of smoke and before a cable fire. Thus, a lot of time is gained for the initiation of measures for the protection of human lives and material assets.

Silver Award: Minimax GmbH & Co. KG

The VN inert gas nozzle from Minimax shows how engineering knowledge can lead to very practical facilitation measures and savings. Until now, it has often been possible to order and install extinguishing nozzles of the RD type with the exact borehole only after the assembly of the extinguishing pipes had been concluded. Not rarely, that led to delays in the commissioning and to more expense. The VN nozzle which has been patented and VdS-authorised in the meantime has a modular design and can be equipped with various top parts. Any necessary adjustments to the screen can now be made quickly and at substantially reduced expense.

Bronze Award: Air Inspector GmbH

So-called drones can be encountered in many fields of life. The Air Inspector is a patented inspection device for fire alarms which are mounted at heights greater than six metres. It consists of a multicopter optimised for indoor flights, e.g. production halls and warehouses, an inspection device and a remote control. For constructors and maintainers, this reduces the setting-up times and the expense for the evacuation of areas. An innovative and practical solution which even makes the work fun in addition.
