The crux of compression: Modernizing decoders to keep pace with encoding
The crux of compression: Modernizing decoders to keep pace with encoding

Decoding is one of the most important aspects of video streaming: It's the phase through which it becomes possible to view images. Yet decoding can be a tricky part of compression since there a lot of different kinds of encoders out there that can transmit video using an array of different compression standards. Moreover, each standard allows for a wide range of profiles with flexible implementation options. As a result, decoders must be able to recognise and appropriately make a quality image out of the video information they receive from a given encoder. The Siqura S-60 D-MC is a unique and cost-effective solution since it can automatically recognise and decompress both MPEG-4 and H.264 into excellent quality images for analogue viewing with very low latency. Through a user-friendly web interface, it is possible to configure an array of features, ranging from serial data streams, duplex audio, and I/O contacts over IP. With an optional SFP slot option, it's possible to use this decoder with fiber optic cable rather than the standard RJ-45 slot and twisted pair cable. These compact decoders are also standardised to commonly-known protocols, making their integration into third-party VMS systems, such as XProtect (Milestone), Omnicast (Genetec), and SkyPoint (Lenel), simple and headache-free. Furthermore, the S-60 D-MC units are part of the Siqura product line, an extensive collection of video surveillance equipment offering complete solutions and reputed for quality and reliability. The complete list of the Siqura S-60 D-MC specifications can be found at the optelecom-nkf website.

Robust encoders put users on the right track for transitions to IP
Robust encoders put users on the right track for transitions to IP

Two new video encoders, the C620E and S620E, from TKH Security Solutions now offer dual H.264, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, and/or MJPEG streaming in addition to ONVIF Profile S compatibility. Each encoder is optimised for a specific security application and their multistreaming capability streamlines IP migration paths in existing CCTV systems. Reuse the legacy infrastructure The C620E and S620E video encoders can integrate into any existing CCTV system to allow users to benefit from IP technology while making use of legacy systems. Each encoder is available with an optional pluggable SFP slot in addition to the standard RJ-45 connector interface. This makes it possible to stream Ethernet signals over Cat 5, coax, or fibre optic cabling when used in combination with the Siqura XSNet SFP for either multimode or single-mode connections or with the Siqura ECO Plug for Ethernet over Coax. Based on open standards Each encoder conforms fully to ONVIF Profile S, which details the ONVIF streaming requirements. This means that each Siqura encoder supports video streaming, PTZ control, audio streaming, NTP, and relay outputs according to the ONVIF standard. By ensuring its Siqura products conform to ONVIF Profile S, TKH Security Solutions offers customers the ability to select the products that best suit their specific project requirements. For a complete list of Profile S-conformant Siqura products, please visit: http://www.onvif.org/Default.aspx?TabID=157&CompanyID=15658&Type=1 For more information about ONVIF, please see the ONVIF white paper from TKH Security Solutions: http://www.siqura.com/Optelecom_c01/default.asp?comid=6&modid=287&itemid=0  Hardened for harsh environments The C620E is NEMA TS-2 certified. This ensures that it is capable of operating optimally in extreme temperatures and despite mechanical disturbances. The NEMA TS-2 certification is a prevalent standard in the United States and is issued by the National Technical Systems (NTS), which works to guarantee that safer and sturdier security solutions are available for the transportation industry.

Bosch introduces new VIP X series of IP network video encoders and decoder
Bosch introduces new VIP X series of IP network video encoders and decoder

Bosch Security Systems’ new VIP X series of IP network MPEG-4 video encoders and decoder offer 4CIF real-time video using less than half the bandwidth and storage space of earlier models. At a maximum frame rate of 30 frames/s, the series’ high-resolution real-time MPEG-4 compressed video offers virtually the same quality as the more space-hungry MPEG-2 compression.  The Flexible MPEG-4 compression algorithm also gives users the choice of different frame rates, ranging from 1 up to the maximum of 30 frames/s, to optimise bandwidth and storage space. The VIP X encoders offer dual-streaming capability which enables them to provide two parallel digital video streams encoded with different video quality settings.  The VIP X1 offers full-motion video for a single camera, while the VIP X2 works with two cameras and offers greater convenience, cost-savings and ease of installation than a separate encoder for each camera.  Both encoders also feature fully-interlaced video, alarm inputs and relay outputs, and pan/tilt/zoom control. The new high-performance Single/Quad Stream VIP XD decoder allows video to be received and displayed on analog or computer VGA monitors.  The cost-effective design features a robust MPEG-4 engine to convert high-quality 4CIF resolution digital-video streams at up to 30 frames/s into analog video for viewing.  The decoder can decode up to 4 streams at once, delivering a quad view on the operator’s monitor. The VIP XD is definitely the most powerful decoder in Bosch’s family of IP products and is compatible with all VIP and VideoJet encoders.   These products are ideal for a wide range of security applications where the highest quality video is needed, bandwidth is limited and storage needs to be saved. Reduced data storage and system costs Seamless integration with existing analog systems Highest resolution video for half the storage (compared with MPEG-2) Single/Quad stream decoding

Veracity HIGHWIRE Longstar for rail and metro environments – there’s light at the end of the tunnel
Veracity HIGHWIRE Longstar for rail and metro environments – there’s light at the end of the tunnel

Within any rail, metro or industrial environment the use of coaxial cable is always a safe bet when positioning remotely-placed CCTV infrastructure within a network that is required to operate consistently and effectively in harsh, extreme conditions. It has a better bend-radius than fibre, it can carry IP data over greater distances than CATx limits with low signal distortion, it tolerates vibration and, once installed, it rarely needs replaced. With significant investment in such infrastructure it’s important to ensure that these essential CCTV networks are as future-proof as possible, especially given the rapid improvements in camera capability and performance, as well as the operational challenges of replacing them. Enables cost-effective analogue-to-IP upgrade Veracity’s HIGHWIRE Longstar™ now provides specifiers, integrators and end-users with a market-leading solution that enables cost-effective upgrades from analogue to the latest IP cameras and devices for long-range Ethernet over Coax, where any downtime for upgrades will often be balanced against commuter schedules. Reaching distances of over 1400m using RG11, Longstar delivers a full, unrestricted 100BaseT and POE and is ruggedized to operate in extreme temperatures (-40°C to 70°C). Alternatively if you need to send data only, Longstar will deliver 10BaseT, without POE, over an impressive 4.2km (2.5 miles), ideal for those long, dark tunnels. The pair of HIGHWIRE Longstar devices will self-configure, self-diagnose and self-optimise on connection, providing instant confirmation of their link status and power level. HIGHWIRE Longstar is BS EN 50121-4 compliant, ensuring that its installation will cope with the challenging conditions of any rail or metro property estate.
