As part of an overall strategy to standardise on CCTV systems and to generate a more cost-effective approach to security, Reading Borough Council were looking for a security provider to deliver CCTV systems that is future proofed to operate on the Council's IT network. South Reading Youth and Community Centre

At the South Reading Youth Community Centre, Sphere Security installed nine analogue CCTV cameras that are being used to deter and monitor the external areas around the Centre which has been experiencing problems with youths taking drugs and anti-social behaviour. The installed security system also provides reassurance in personal safety for people visiting the centre.

Working in partnership with the local Police, the South Reading Youth and Community Centre has achieved success in reducing the use of drugs and the Police and Reading Borough Council have been impressed with the quality of the CCTV images provided by the new system.

Sarah Jolly, Service Wide Facilities Manager for Integrated Youth Development Service, explains: "Sphere Security designed the system utilising anti-vandal mini dome cameras, which can be manually selected from inside the main office. Overall, the implementation of the project went very smoothly and we have received fantastic service from the Sphere Security team. The system is easy to use and has provided excellent operational and safety functionality."

Property Services

Within the Property Services department, Sphere Security provided an upgrade to the existing CCTV camera systems for four sites which were of a poor quality and no longer delivering the required level of surveillance.

Bob Newman, Electrical Engineer for Property Services comments: "We set Sphere Security a challenge to get fully operational one of our problematic sites that currently has 41 cameras monitoring 3 residential areas. I am pleased to say that they completed this challenge in a professional and timely manner and the complete system is now fully operational and providing good quality information both locally and remotely via the latest in recording equipment.

Sphere Security are now being utilised to inspect, recommend and upgrade the current security systems within the housing estates and tower blocks to ensure that Property Services can continue to provide excellent CCTV images to the Police as and when required."

Sheltered Accommodation

For the safety of the older generation and residents of the old people homes in Reading, the Sheltered Accommodation department has worked with Sphere Security to complete five sites with new internal CCTV systems. The main motivation for the installations was based on a review undertaken with the older generation and current tenants in the sheltered accommodation. One of the main issues that arose was to give the residents a better feeling of safety whilst protecting the site and personal possessions within it.

Gill Rimmer, Tenant Support Services Manager, comments: "We have been extremely pleased with the work undertaken by Sphere Security who have provided an excellent service and demonstrated their security expertise during the recent implementations. For Reading Borough Council, the advantage of standardisation on all our CCTV systems ensures a more cost-effective approach working with one partner under a full maintenance contract and in allowing the operatives to work within all the sites throughout the Council utilising the same products. Sphere Security had to overcome a number of problems on one of our sites due to alterations that were made to the system post survey. The engineers worked with us to resolve the issues and went the "extra mile" to deliver the project."
