Funded by the Asian Development Bank, the Shanxi Province motorway project involves construction of a 1,500 km four-lane toll expressway in northwestern China. The highway will include a 4.5km bridge over the Yellow River. The Conway units will be used at tollbooths and for general surveillance purposes on open carriageway and in tunnels.
The equipment has been supplied to the Spanish consultant, Intra SA, by Conway's partner, ECV Video Seguridad. ECV recommended Conway's AC pan and tilts, which have been used so extensively on road system projects throughout Europe and the rest of the world.
Security managers in Shanxi Province are also using camera housings from Conway's EH range. These units are fitted with a built-in wiper, which is important for applications such as roadside surveillance where accumulation of contaminates on the housing screen is likely.
ECV has been consistently impressed with the performance of Conway housings on similar infrastructure projects. In addition to this recent usage, an outstanding portfolio includes the £1.5bn Oresund bridge link between Sweden and Denmark and the £420m Dublin Port Tunnel (installed earlier this year.) Closer to home, Harlow-based David Webster Limited is currently installing Conway pan and tilts and housings on the M1 motorway in Hertfordshire.
Cristina Quero of ECV said: "The Conway housings have a strong record in motorway environments where fumes and fluctuating ambient temperatures make exceptional demands on equipment. The Shanxi highway will run through mountainous country with a range of temperatures. The wipered Conway EH units are proving the preferred choice of our customers at this type of location."
Shanxi Province is in the middle reach of the Yellow River; an area dotted with ancient caves, grottoes and Buddhist temples. The region is rich in mineral deposits, particularly coal. The motorway features seven toll centres and 15 bridges. It will provide a transport artery to the port of Tianjin and is set to regenerate the north west of the country.
