Axis monitoring system in Swedish Lidl store
Lidl requires a well functioning monitoring system to offer greater security
Mission

Lidl's stores handle a large quantity of cash everyday, which means there is a high risk for robbery and other incidents. In order to prevent the risk of robbery and to give personnel greater security, Lidl requires a well functioning monitoring system. When Lidl needed to modernise its existing analogue monitoring system, it sought a system with great flexibility, which also needed to be cost-effective, simple to install, and provide the best image quality.

Solution

Lidl considered a large number of camera monitoring systems and decided that network cameras from Axis Communications best fulfilled the company's requirements. The AXIS 209FD Network Camera and the AXIS 221 Day & Night Network Camera were chosen. Each store has 18-20 cameras, both for monitoring the cash area, entrances and exits, shop surface, and also the areas to which customers do not have access. The network-based cameras are connected into Lidl's existing IT infrastructure. A solution of this type provides many advantages: simple installation, scalability and the potential to move the cameras in a flexible way as required, and in accordance with the license from the County Administrative Board.

Result

The new monitoring system increases the safety of personnel and improves security when handling cash. Digital technology provides a significantly better image quality and potential incidents can be resolved more easily. The images are clearer and identification of objects and people are thereby simplified.

The evaluation of the installations led to the decision to use the same monitoring solution in all its stores, which means that the old analogue system gradually will be replaced.

A reliable and stable system

Axis partner MKS Sverige AB received the commission to install the cameras in Lidl's stores. MKS adopted a suitable Network Video Recorder (NVR) to record video. This is built on the software XProtect Enterprise from Milestone Systems. XProtect Enterprise is software that manages network cameras.

"Lidl is a very particular and well-informed customer, who sets high requirements on reliability and image quality. They wanted cameras from Axis that are integrated with Milestone's platform. We suggested our MKS-NVR 3 for recording. It was a perfect combination; outstanding reliability and stability, and in addition a cost-effective solution," says Dick Larsson, CEO of MKS.

Axis network cameras don't just deliver high image quality. The fact that Axis network video solutions have been successfully installed in many retail chains around the world has also contributed to the choice of Axis as supplier.

Flexibility is characteristic of Axis network video

Lidl is part of the Schwartz group, which is the 6th largest retail company in the world. During 2008 Lidl opened its 145th store in Sweden. An efficient and scalable IT infrastructure is always installed when a new Lidl store is constructed. Previously electricity and video cables has been installed in order for the analogue cameras to be connected. Lidl can now avoid this because the cameras can be connected into the IT network. New installations of network cameras are also easier, as the same cable is used for both electricity supply and network video thanks to the support of Power over Ethernet (PoE) technology. This provides greater flexibility and means that, in principle, cameras can be set up anywhere in the store.

The flexibility and scalability of network video make it possible to use existing IT infrastructure in new installations

"The flexibility and scalability also made network video particularly interesting because we didn't need to install separate cables for the cameras but can instead use the existing IT infrastructure in new installations," says Arvid Johansson, head of security at Lidl.

Axis is the market leader in network video and is represented in a great number of countries in which Lidl is also active. These were also important aspects in the final choice of Axis as a collaborating partner.

Everything new will be digital

Network video is an investment for the future. All new Swedish Lidl stores that are built with a monitoring system are equipped with Axis cameras. Older stores will also undergo an upgrade to network video once the cameras need to be changed. In the past, analog cameras were used. However, these are now being replaced with network cameras. The majority of monitoring now occurs automatically with minimal effort from personnel. Recorded material only needs to be checked through, otherwise it is deleted after 30 days.

"All material is recorded and stored in accordance with the license, and in the event of an incident we can simply go back and look at what was recorded during the event. The network cameras enable us to significantly simplify the identification of objects and events compared with the analogue system", says Arvid Johansson, head of security at Lidl.

Lidl is continuing its rapid expansion, which places high requirements on the safety of personnel. The new IP-based solution has increased personnel security, and Lidl can be satisfied knowing that not only are personnel safer, but the monitoring costs have been reduced while the overall flexibility has been considerably increased.
