Sony HD network security cameras maintains video surveillance at 9/11 Memorial
The system comprises 300 SNC-DH280 full HD mini domes, SNC-DH120 mini domes and SNC-RH164 rapid domes

An all-Sony HD network security cameras system is now in service maintaining video surveillance at the National September 11 Memorial (9/11 Memorial) in New York City. The installation consists of some 300 SNC-DH280 full HD (1080P) mini dome cameras, 720P SNC-DH120 mini domes and SNC-RH164 rapid domes.

The camera selection process began in early 2009. Working in conjunction with 9/11 Memorial staff, New York City-based Universal Security Systems conducted extensive onsite testing of numerous cameras from major manufacturers.

The greatest design challenge was meeting the need for a minimal "footprint" for security cameras on the memorial's plaza level. Sony's 5th-generation SNC-DH280 full HD (1080P) mini dome cameras with View-DR™ dynamic range enhancement technology and IR illuminator was chosen because this miniaturized model delivers high resolution so that fewer cameras can cover greater area than with lower resolution imaging.

"The plaza level at the memorial has very few suitable camera positions, but our SNC-DH280 5thgeneration full HD technology miniaturized security cameras met the technical needs without intruding on what is sacred space," said Mark Collett, General Manager, Sony Security Systems Division."

Collett added that the 9/11 Memorial surveillance video installation demonstrates the enormous advances in security technology. Initial specifications for the memorial drawn up several years ago called for analog cameras. Now, the network camera architecture provides maximum performance for local security staff as well as real-time access for other law enforcement organizations as needed.
